Sailors stationed aboard amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) visited children of Emukae Kindergarten as part of a community relations (COMREL) visit to Sasebo, Japan, Dec. 21.

During the visit, Sailors answered questions about the Navy, played Santa's helpers, sang Christmas carols and participated in a gift exchange. The children also surprised the Sailors with dance performances, and gifted them with hand-made Christmas cards and garlands.

"I really enjoyed our time at the Japanese kindergarten. We sang songs and watched performances, traded gifts and even brought Santa with us," said Religious Programs Specialist 1st Class Justin Robison, from Avon, Indiana. "It was overwhelming, but fun to be around so many children, swarming us [and] sharing their joy."

The two groups overcame language barrier challenges with infectious excitement as they celebrated together.

"This COMREL was a great morale booster, especially for Sailors stationed on the other side of the world from their families and friends," said Robison. "It also gives a positive outlook for the children on how they view Americans and our Navy, and helps us to build a stronger relationship between American and Japanese people."

Kindergarten teacher Yuko Nakano led the children and Sailor interaction, making sure that both sides shared in the fun.

"We have invited Sailors to visit the children every Christmas time for three or four years now," explained Nakano. "The kids are always looking forward to meeting the Sailors. At first they may be a bit shy, but it does not take long for them to enjoy the interaction."

Nakano said that the Sailors' caroling was a pleasant surprise for her and the children.

"It was great to hear the carols sung in your language," said Nakano. "I think it brought us closer together."

Aviation Boatswain's Mate (Handling) 3rd Class Julessa Heathe, from Bronx, New York, said she really enjoyed spending time with the children during the holiday season.

"It was so much fun. It is nice to see so much energy coming from the kids," said Heathe. "As you grow up and grow older, you can forget what it is like to be a kid because you have so many responsibilities as an adult. So, I enjoyed seeing children laugh, dance, and seeing just how much joy we can bring into their little lives."

Nakano said she was grateful for Sailors' visit and the happiness it brought to the children.

"I hope that we can continue this friendship for many Christmases to come," Nakano said.
