Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) Sailors from the Shirane-class destroyer JS Kurama (DDH 144) visited amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) for a holiday gift exchange, Dec. 21.

During the visit, Kurama Sailors toured several Bonhomme Richard spaces and presented kagamimuchi rice cakes. Cmdr. Shin Makino, Kurama's executive officer, said the rice cakes not only teach U.S. Sailors about Japanese culture, but it also symbolizes prosperity.

"This exchange event is mainly to tell U.S. Navy personnel of Japanese traditions, as well as a wish for harvest and good health for the new year." said Makino.

Machinist's Mate 1st Class Victor Seth, a Long Beach, California native, said participating in the holiday gift exchange gave him the opportunity to interact with Japan's service members and learn about their way of life.

"I am very honored to participate in the blessing of the ship," said Seth. "I feel that this will increase our relationship with the Japanese. The more we learn about each other, the better the understanding. Understanding leads to peace."

The holiday gift exchange serves to promote a healthy partnership between the two ships, as well as strengthen military ties. Before departing, Bonhomme Richard presented a Christmas wreath to Kurama, a symbol of growth and everlasting life.

This will be the last year for a gift exchange between Bonhomme Richard and Kurama as Kurama prepares to decommission, but the two crews said they hope the holiday tradition continues when a new Japanese ship arrives.
