The Training Support Center Hampton Roads (TSCHR) Safety Office took the opportunity to help instill safety tips for military and civilian personnel during their annual Critical Days of Summer Safety Stand-Down May 11.

This year's topics not only included recreational and off-duty activities, but also included great reminders on high-risk sports and what to do in the event of an active shooter. Traveling safely is always paramount -- as was reflected with discussions on the various hazards of being fatigued, the use of alcohol and drugs prior to driving, the various ways one can be distracted, and the importance of using seatbelts.

With the Memorial Day holiday weekend fast approaching, the information and training provided by TSCHR leadership maintains their commitment to keeping all personnel safe and healthy during the summer months.

TSCHR Safety Manager and event coordinator David Bennett commented, "Every year we attempt to make the Summer Safety Stand-Down as interesting as possible by adding different scenarios and the most up-to-date information readily available so that TSCHR members and their families make good, safe choices."

Capt. Ed Gettins, TSCHR commanding officer, spoke to the audience regarding new boating and jet-skiing age limits effective July 1st, and where personnel can get training both on and off base.

"Through proper training and use of personal protective equipment, then everyone can safely enjoy watersports whether at the beach or on the many lakes or rivers in the area," said Gettins.

"If this stand-down prevents loss of life or injury, it was a worthwhile investment of our time," said Bennett.

In 2015, TSCHR provided student management, quota control, and professional development for 79,503 Sailors, Marines, Soldiers and Airmen from the U.S. Armed Forces and 23 allied nations supported by TSCHR.

Through the innovative use of manpower and resources, TSCHR and its learning sites provide the fleet with highly-trained Sailors, Marines and the operational support that empowers them to meet the ever-changing global demands of today's Navy, Marine Corps, Army, Air Force and Coast Guard.
