Sailors assigned to the submarine tender USS Frank Cable (AS 40) volunteered time and labor participating in a community relations project during a port visit in Tinian, May 15.

Sailors spent the afternoon painting a pavilion and doing yard cleanup in preparation for Tinian's upcoming Memorial Day event.

"We recognize we are guests here," said Lt. Cmdr. Stephen Fisher, Frank Cable's command chaplain. "This is one of the ways we show our thankfulness for the hospitality we are given by the island and the community."

Community service is also a way of showing what good can come from welcoming the military into the community.

"I think it's very important for the Navy to come out here and help out," said Hainy Borja, a liaison to the Tinian mayor's office. "It's a way for the locals to have a better understanding of the military."

Frank Cable leadership encourages and supports Sailors to volunteer and make a lasting impact in the communities the crew visits, to leave a positive image of America's Navy.

"I am so proud of how the Sailors of Frank Cable sacrifice their personal time to make a difference in the communities that we visit throughout the 7th and 5th Fleet," said Cmdr. Ed Callahan, Frank Cable executive officer. "The time they spend enriching the lives of those they are serving through the many different community relations projects has significantly enhanced their lives by helping them to understand and appreciate the various diverse communities and cultures. I know these COMREL experiences will provide these Sailors with a wonderful lifetime memory."

Frank Cable, forward deployed to the island of Guam, conducts maintenance and support of submarines and surface vessels in the 5th and 7th Fleet areas of responsibility.
