Service members from the U.S. Navy, Coast Guard and Marine Corps got a chance to show their skills and test their might live on national television with the Fox and Friends morning show by participating in a friendly physical fitness competition during Fleet Week New York, May 26.
Service members from the U.S. Navy, Coast Guard and Marine Corps got a chance to show their skills and test their might live on national television with the Fox and Friends morning show by participating in a friendly physical fitness competition during Fleet Week New York, May 26.

During the event, four service members from each of the three branches took turns competing against some of the station's news correspondents in a mini obstacle course, which was designed by the Civilian Military Combine (CMC).

"We wanted to come out here today to honor the U.S. sea services and give them a taste of what we have to offer in the bigger race this upcoming fall," said CMC Marketing Director Eleni Roseli. "We're thrilled for the opportunity to be here. It's amazing to see these honorable men and women who put their lives on the line for us."

The CMC is an original hybrid obstacle course race including a functional fitness crossfit-style workout and a five-mile run with more than 25 military-inspired obstacles. The mini course, which was set up on a lot outside of Fox News Channel's studio, included a portion of the race known as "The Pit," where participants complete a stair step exercise with weights, crawl through a barbed-wire covered mud pit, climb a 12-foot vertical wall, run up and over a quarter pipe wall and finish with ringing a bell at the end of a set of monkey bars.

"My favorite part was the dirt pit, but I was also super excited to be on TV," said Operations Specialist 3rd Class Shaulana Waters, one-fourth of the Navy's team. "This is my first Fleet Week and I am glad I was able to come out to do this. I was texting my wife all morning to see if she could see me on the show, so hopefully I did well enough to look good on air."

Fox and Friends News Correspondent Lea Gabrielle shared a little more than just the course with the four USS Bataan (LHD 5) Sailors she competed against.

"I'm a former F/A 18 pilot in the U.S. Navy," she said. "So I had to come out and support my fellow Sailors and Marines. These are awesome men and women and I am so proud of them. They're here in New York City looking very sharp in their uniforms and they make me very proud to have served."

According to Roselli, CMC was born out of the desire to honor the military and the foundation is built on patriotism through athleticism. She hopes that the race will serve as a means of releasing some of the stresses associated with serving in the military.

"It makes me appreciative that there are organizations like this that dedicate their entire being to helping service members deal with the stress of being in the military," said Aerographer's Mate 2nd Class Aaron Payne, who competed as part of the Navy team. "It just makes me that much more proud to do what I do everyday as a part of the U.S. Navy."

FWNY, held nearly every year since 1984, is the city's celebration of the sea services. The week-long event provides an opportunity for the citizens of New York City and the surrounding tri-state area to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen, and showcase sea service personnel, technology, and capabilities.
