Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) welcomed U.S. Naval Academy Distinguished Military Professor of Ethics Capt. Rick Rubel as guest speaker for the NAVSUP leadership seminar series, which began in April.

Rubel spoke on the topic of character development and explained that character and morals are related.

"Character drives our actions and actions shape our character," said Rubel. "Our character is the sum of all our virtues. How do we use those virtues to affect our decisions and actions? We develop one virtue at a time."

Virtues like humility, judgment, compassion, pride, and emotional intelligence became topics of questions and discussion with active audience participation -- contemplating ideas about the consequences of actions, and why people choose to sometimes make wrong decisions.

"Character is the 'doing' part," Rubel explained. "We need character so people can trust us. If someone's character is flawed, we're less likely to trust that person. Character matters."

NAVSUP features a new guest speaker in its leadership series on a quarterly basis to guide and educate all employees. Another lecture in the series is scheduled this fall.

NAVSUP's mission is to provide supplies, services, and quality-of-life support to the Navy and joint warfighter. With headquarters in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, and employing a diverse, worldwide workforce of more than 22,500 military and civilian personnel, NAVSUP oversees logistics programs in the areas of supply operations, conventional ordnance, contracting, resale, fuel, transportation, and security assistance. In addition, NAVSUP is responsible for food service, postal services, Navy Exchanges, and movement of household goods.
