Vice Adm. Thomas J. Moore, commander, Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), came aboard aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68) July 21 to meet the crew and tour the ship.

At an all-hands call, Moore spoke to Sailors about Nimitz's extended planned incremental maintenance availability (EPIA) at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility, and took a tour to see some of the ship's major systems and check on progress Nimitz has made during the availability.

"One thing that makes a successful availability for a carrier is committed leadership among the crew and the chain of command, and that's what's happened on board Nimitz," said Moore. "I know you've been in a tough availability, but the end is in sight."

This was the first time Moore visited the ship since being appointed commander of NAVSEA in June.

NAVSEA is the largest of the Navy's five systems commands. Its global workforce of more than 56,000 military and civilian personnel engineer, design, build, buy and maintain ships, submarines and combat systems that meet the fleet's current and future operational requirements.

Nimitz began EPIA January 2015 to receive major upgrades during a period of deep maintenance and modernization coordinated using the efforts of the ship's workforce and the technical expertise of civilian workers.
