Sailors from forward-deployed guided-missile destroyer USS Barry (DDG 52) participated in a passing exercise (PASSEX) with members of the Republic of Korea navy (ROKN), July 28-29.

Barry took part in various maneuvering formations, communications; gunnery; visit, board, search and seizure; and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) exercises with guided-missile destroyer Republic of Korea Sejong (ROKS) Yulgok Yi-I (DDG 992), Incheon-class frigate ROKS Chungbuk (FFG 816), and patrol combat corvette ROKS Puchon (PCC 773).

"The exercise was an excellent learning opportunity," said Cmdr. Jennifer Eaton, commanding officer of Barry. "The professionalism and expertise of our ROKN counterparts gives our Sailors invaluable training experience. Interoperability between our two navies shines brightest in events like these. As Barry becomes more familiar with our 7th Fleet allies, we become a more effective force."

Conducting a PASSEX helps develop the maritime capabilities between the two naval forces and benefits both countries' readiness and partnership for future operations.

Barry's Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer Lt. j.g. Erin McKenna, from Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania, led a team during a tracking exercise with the ROKN and said the ability to share precise information with seagoing allies illustrates the highest level of warfare proficiency.

"The Expendable Mobile Anti-Submarine Training Target Tracking Exercise allowed Barry's anti-submarine warfare team to simulate identifying the location of targets when real-world contacts are not available," said McKenna. "This particular exercise with the ROKN allowed our ASW watchstanders to hone and share tactics and techniques with our allies, which allows us to better prepare for the dynamic ASW environment within 7th Fleet."

Barry, a new addition to U.S. 7th Fleet, arrived in Yokosuka, Japan, earlier this year to replace guided-missile destroyer USS Lassen (DDG 82). In its first patrol as a forward-deployed unit, Barry's crew has learned firsthand the demands of operating in the area and the importance of allies such as the ROK.

Barry is currently on patrol in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations in support of security and stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific.
