Sailors and civilians from area training commands hosted a ceremony on board Naval Base San Diego Sept. 11 to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on America.

Training Support Center (TSC) San Diego, Center for Service Support (CSS), and Naval Education and Training Center (NETC) General Skills Training (GST) department staff and students gathered to pay tribute to the lives lost at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

"The sense of patriotism and unity for this country, along with the sorrow for the families who lost someone, was very real," said Senior Chief Aviation Ordanceman Randy Quihuis. "Taking the time to remember this day every year is a [sign of] respect to those we lost during those tragic events."

During the remembrance, chief petty officer selectees presented a commemorative speech of the sequence of events that happened on 9/11. "In my lifetime, this is one of the most tragic events that happened to our nation," said Chief (select) Machinist Mate Geobany Castillorosales. "Everyone will always remember what they were doing the morning this happened and how it made them feel." Cmdr. Michael L. Phillips, TSC San Diego chaplain, provided the invocation and benediction and led a moment of silence in memory of the lives lost during the attacks.

"Our lives and memories were indelibly marked and unalterably changed by the events of 9/11, in the same way our grandparents lives were fundamentally change by the December 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor," said Capt. John D. Wilshusen, TSC San Diego commanding officer. "This ceremony gives us the opportunity to remember those who fell, and helps remind us that we are the extension of their hopes and dreams as citizens. It is up to us to carry forward the standards of liberty and freedom they gave their lives in pursuit of."
