Twelve students from Training Support Center (TSC) Great Lakes, along with an Operations Specialist (OS) 'A' school instructor, helped science-minded students from Queen of the Rosary Catholic School in Elk Grove Village by serving as judges for the school's annual science fair, Jan. 28.

"It's good to help out and show them that we support them as much as they support us," said Operations Specialist 2nd Class Tamiska Blue, an OS 'A' school instructor with Center for Surface Combat Systems Unit (CSCSU) Great Lakes.

Queen of the Rosary, a northwest suburb of Chicago school, teaches students through 8th grade. This science fair was for 8th grade students.

Blue and the TSC students judged each experiment based on three criteria: presentation, scientific approach and written report. She said, serving the community as well as with the day-to-day duties is a way for Blue and her fellow Sailors to remain involved in the area and to help give back.

"It's also fun to see what they're learning how things have changed since I was in school," Blue said.

The teachers and students at the Queen of the Rosary also enjoyed having the Sailors serve as judges for the contest.

"We like to have the Sailors here because, one, we need judges that are not family members and two, they serve as good role models for the students here," said Shirley Runge, a science teacher at the school and co-organizer of the annual science fair.
