Students in the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) program visited two learning sites at Naval Station Great Lakes March 14 to learn more about how the Navy trains its Sailors.

Students from Anchor Bay High School in suburban Detroit were in the Chicagoland area for a drill competition and visited the Center for Surface Combat Systems Unit (CSCSU) and Surface Warfare Officers School Unit (SWOSU) Great Lakes learning sites as part of that trip.

"We love the opportunity to come here to see what the Navy does with their tech training side of the house," said retired Air Force Col. Jeff Carrothers, the Anchor Bay High School AFJROTC instructor who helped organize the trip to CSCSU and SWOSU.

During the tour, more than 30 cadets, JROTC instructors and parents saw how the Navy trains its Operations Specialists (OS), Quartermasters (QM), Machinist Mates (MM) and Gas Turbine Systems Technicians (GSM) while touring the 'A' school for each of these rates.

"We get excited when we have these tours so they can see what runs the Navy. It's not only the ships, it's the people," said Operations Specialist 1st Class LaWanda Glenn, an OS 'A' school instructor for CSCSU. "It feels good that we can help them increase their knowledge (of the Navy) or with questions that they have."
