Sailors assigned to submarine tender USS Emory S. Land (AS 39) refurbished polarity lights on the mine countermeasures ship USS Warrior (MCM 10), March 17.

Mine countermeasures ships use polarity lights to pulse in tandem and signal to each other.

The refurbishment will allow Warrior to better and more safely communicate with other ships and improve their mission readiness.

"Due to the nature of the environment we're in, we don't really get the part support and the work support we need to make a lot of these things happen," said Electrician's Mate 1st Class Dean Devenecia, Electrical Division leading petty officer aboard Warrior. "The fact that they pulled in and were able to effectively make repairs on them almost immediately is extremely helpful and saves us a lot of time and planning."

The job also afforded the Sailors conducting the repairs their first opportunity to explore and work on a mine countermeasures ship.

"It was definitely a change of pace," said Electrician's Mate 3rd Class Jan Scott Oviso. "Working on a big ship like the Emory S. Land where Military Sealift Command civilian mariners typically take care of the electrical stuff, it was my first time doing something for another ship. It was a good learning experience to work on another platform and great to help them out."

Members of Warrior's crew walked away impressed with the capability and attitude of Emory S. Land Sailors.

"The Sailors I've interacted with were very professional and very knowledgeable," said Devenecia. "When they're given a task they pursue it aggressively to its completion. They don't look for shortcuts. They definitely do things in a professional manner."

Emory S. Land is a forward-deployed expeditionary submarine tender on an extended deployment conducting coordinated tended moorings and afloat maintenance in the U.S. 5th and 7th Fleet areas of operations.
