Active duty and civilian supervisors gathered at the Naval Undersea Museum in Keyport to enhance their leadership skills at a Supervisor Training course hosted by Naval Supply Systems Command Fleet Logistics Center Puget Sound, March 29 and 30.

The course, which was a refresher for supervisors of civilian employees at NAVSUP FLC Puget Sound, provided an opportunity to learn about the latest policy updates and recent developments in Department of the Navy Human Resource programs.

The training focused on continuing education and skills development for civilian and military personnel that manage and supervise civilian employees.

"This course provides training on a number of topics that they can apply when performing their supervisor duties," said NAVSUP FLC Puget Sound Executive Director John H. Hornbrook III. "We want to increase their supervisory skill set."

Topics included overviews of personnel management principles, resolving disputes, employee training and development, creating position descriptions, writing employee assessments, and workforce planning. Students were also brought up to speed on key personnel programs, including reasonable accommodation, Drug Free Workplace Program, Merit System Principles, and the DON Civilian Employee Assistance Program.

Human Resource subject-matter experts Mary Allmann, Loi Bi, and Joyce Murray from the NAVSUP Global Logistics Support Human Resources Office in San Diego put together the training curriculum for the course and traveled to Keyport to teach the classroom sessions.
The course was developed after NAVSUP FLC Puget Sound leadership noticed that there wasn't a formal, ongoing training program for supervisory personnel at the command.

"We hire people into supervisor positions and then expect them to be good supervisors," said Hornbrook. "Some will be good from the start, but many might not be as good as they could be because they just don't have the training. With this course, everyone benefits - the command, the supervisors, and the employees."

With NAVSUP FLC Puget Sound activities scattered throughout the region from Whidbey Island to Manchester Fuel Depot, the training was also an opportunity to bring all of the command's supervisors together.

"I think there is always value added in bringing all of us supervisors together other face to face," said course attendee John Gonzalez, deputy head of the FLC Puget Sound Installation Support Department. "It's an opportunity to share our own experiences and compare notes."

"It's also a chance to meet and talk with the HR people that support us," said Gonzalez. "As supervisors, we work a lot with Ms. Altman, Ms. Murray, and Mr. Bi through email and phone conversations. It's helpful to speak with them in person."

In the future, the supervisor training course will be conducted twice a year.
