USS George H.W. Bush Sailors of the Year and Sailors of the Quarter visited veterans at the Polytrauma Transitional Rehabilitation Program in Richmond, Virginia, March 30.

The Hunter Holmes McGuire Veterans Affairs Medical Center rehabilitates service members who have sustained a traumatic brain injury or other serious illnesses.

"I didn't really know what we would be doing at the hospital," said Master-at-Arms 3rd Class Valeria Nunezmanzano. "Once we arrived and started our tour, I saw the level of care, the staff and the different phases they go through. I feel very refreshed. If I or someone I work with was ever put in this type of situation, I know there are lots of resources."

Staff members gave Bush Sailors a tour of the facility and another building where injured service members re-learn everyday activities most people take for granted.

"The facility was above and beyond what I expected," said Master Chief Information Systems Technician Juston Geigley. "It uses top of the line technology and equipment that greatly enhances the healing and recovery process. It's great to see so many people take patients in as their own family."

At the Polytrauma Transitional Center, Sailors also met with veterans who are on the road to recovery. Some are trying to return to active duty and resume working toward serving their country, but most strive to acclimate back into normal life.

George H.W. Bush is currently undergoing a planned incremental availability in Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth.
