Naval Supply Systems Command's auditorium was the venue for a standing-room-only crowd of more than 350 civilian and military personnel for the first lecture in a new NAVSUP leadership seminar series that began April 6 in Mechanicsburg.

Keynote speaker NAVSUP Commander Rear Adm. Jonathan A. Yuen shared personal details about his career and how his experiences have shaped who he has become as a Navy leader. He emphasized that while his leadership style has changed over time, his steadfast commitment to ethics remains focused on what is good, right, and honorable -- respecting the dignity of all persons, obeying authority, and making ethics a part of all decisions and behavior.

Yuen talked about his personal philosophy and who he is at the core. He broke his philosophy down into three areas--servant's heart, bedside manner, and Socratic mindset.

"Servant's heart is about putting the mission first, before oneself," said Yuen. "Bedside manner is treating others with care, concern, and kindness. Socratic mindset is about asking why. It's about learning. It's about apprenticeship, being a student of the game, and learning from others."

Yuen also talked about the importance of the diversity of ideas and how good ideas come from everywhere, from many people from different backgrounds with unique experiences. He noted that diversity is not just about race, it's about ideas and perspectives developed as we experience life.

NAVSUP will continue its new leadership series this summer and carry forth the series quarterly.

NAVSUP's mission is to provide supplies, services, and quality-of-life support to the Navy and Joint warfighter. With headquarters in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, and employing a diverse, worldwide workforce of more than 22,500 military and civilian personnel, NAVSUP oversees logistics programs in the areas of supply operations, conventional ordnance, contracting, resale, fuel, transportation, and security assistance. In addition, NAVSUP is responsible for food service, postal services, Navy Exchanges, and movement of household goods.
