USS Jackson (LCS 6), the Navy's sixth Littoral Combat Ship (LCS), arrived at Naval Station (NAVSTA) Mayport, Florida, Dec. 11 for an extended stay for shipyard maintenance and at-sea testing off the Florida coast.

Jackson will remain in Mayport throughout spring and summer of 2016, and will be ultimately homeported in San Diego.

LCSs are fully reliant on distance support to fulfill logistics requirements. The Logistics Support Team (LST) from Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) Fleet Logistics Center (FLC) San Diego will remotely order stores, repair parts, and subsistence for the ships while simultaneously managing financial documents.

NAVSUP FLC Jacksonville's LST Mayport will provide hazardous material support, and receive, store, and deliver material to the ships according to the deputy director of LST Mayport. LST Mayport and San Diego will work closely to ensure logistics requirements are fulfilled.

"This is a great test run for the newly formed LST Mayport and a tremendous opportunity to learn and establish ourselves," said Lt. Cmdr. Nate Edge, director, NAVSUP FLC Jacksonville detachment LST Mayport. "Our first Mayport homeported ship, USS Little Rock (LCS 9), is scheduled to arrive later in 2016."

Over the next few years, a total of eight littoral combat ships will be homeported at NAVSTA Mayport and will be supported by the NAVSUP FLC Jacksonville LST.
