Sailors standing duty Christmas Day aboard Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) were joined by their family members for a special Christmas meal on the Floating Accommodation Facility (FAF) mess decks, Dec. 25.

The meal included a variety of items including traditional Christmas favorites. Families also enjoyed games and a movie while visiting their Sailor on duty.

Before the meal was served, Lincoln's commanding officer, Capt. Ron Ravelo, spoke with his Sailors and their families.

"To my shipmates on duty, I thank you for standing the watch on this special day," Ravelo said. "I hope you and your families that were able to make it on board enjoy the meal our galley crew has prepared, and that you have a happy new year."

Being away from family during the holidays can be tough, especially for those with little ones at home.

"For them to see where I work is cool," said Aviation Electronics Technician 1st Class Wyonna Centonze, assigned to Lincoln's Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department (AIMD). "My husband was on the Roosevelt during its [refueling and complex overhaul], so my kids get to see where I spend my time."

The holidays are a time when many find themselves gathering at family homes for a festive Christmas meal. Having this opportunity for Sailors to bring their families aboard for a meal allowed them to keep part of that tradition.

"Christmas is about family, so it is nice to see my family while on duty," Centonze said.

Lincoln is currently undergoing Refueling and Complex Overhaul (RCOH) at Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries in Newport News.

Lincoln is the fifth Nimitz-class ship to undergo RCOH, a major life-cycle milestone. Once RCOH is complete, Lincoln will be one of the most modern and technologically advanced Nimitz-class aircraft carriers in the fleet, and will continue to be a vital part of the nation's defense.
