The Center for Surface Combat Systems (CSCS) Fleet Anti-Submarine Warfare Training Center (FLEASWTRACEN) and Mine Warfare Training Center (MWTC) staff and students held its annual 9/11 remembrance ceremony onboard Naval Base Point Loma, Sept. 11.

Capt. Scott Dugan, FLEASWTRACEN commanding officer, stressed to 300 staff and students that they should never forget the events of that day.

"The searing imagery of that Tuesday morning will live on with all of us," Dugan said. "Some of you were already serving our country on that fateful day, some of you may have signed up out of a sense of patriotism, and others may have only been in grade school when the attacks took place. The one thing you all have in common is that you are here now, answering your country's call. I couldn't be more proud of the men and women here today."

Following Dugan's address, Operations Specialist 1st Class Shanika McClammy led the command in a somber remembrance of the events of that morning 14 years ago which claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 people.

"I remember being underway on the USS George Washington (CVN 73) when the attacks happened," McClammy said. "We stood by off the coast of New York and I can still remember the smell of the smoke from the towers. So much has changed since that day and I think it's important to remember the bravery of those who went towards the danger instead of away from it. Whether we realize it or not, 9/11 has shaped who we are and how we live our lives."

After the ceremony, staff and students left in silence and went back to work and class. These men and women know that there is an essential job to do, and with a tireless resolve, will not be deterred.
