Military and civilian employees from Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) Business Systems Center (BSC) participated in a wheelchair basketball tournament, hosted by the Chairiot Express Wheelchair Athletic Association, Oct. 21.

The association promotes sports participation for children with disabilities.

"I am in awe watching the Chairiots play so well," said NAVSUP BSC Commanding Officer Capt. Kurt Wendelken. "NAVSUP Business Systems Center is very proud to show our support for this event."

The event began with Mechanicsburg Middle School students versus Good Hope Middle School students. Good Hope won with a score of 4-2. This gave Good Hope students a chance to face-off against Jr. Chairiots, with Jr. Chairiots winning 3-2.

Next, the Mechanicsburg staff faced the Good Hope staff. Mechanicsburg won in a 10-0 blowout.

Then came the night's big rivalry as the Navy Civilians faced the Navy Military. The teams were very competitive and enjoyed having fun, but the Civilians dominated 12-0.

Before the finals, the two losing teams faced off. Navy Military beat the Good Hope staff with a score of 12-8.

During a brief intermission the Mechanicsburg cheerleaders performed a dance routine.

Once the games proceeded, the winner of Game 1, Mechanicsburg staff, competed against the Chairiot Express. Chairiot Express came out on top, 14-4.

The Navy Civilians appeared almost unbeatable; at least until the final game of the night. As they faced the Chairiots, the Civilians had finally met their match. The Chairiots won the tournament with a final game score of 21-18.

The event was held to foster awareness of the capabilities of people with disabilities.

"Great competition tonight," said Tom McMaughton, who plays for the Chairiot Express. "I love being part of an event that brings awareness to people with disabilities."

This year's theme is "My Disability is ONE Part of Who I am". It expresses the idea that, at work or school, it is what people with disabilities CAN do that matters. People with disabilities have played a part in moving our nation forward by distinguishing themselves in virtually every occupation and profession. NAVSUP BSC is a proud sponsor of this event and theme.
