Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Atlantic recently named Stephen C. Ericson, P.E. its top engineer, Oct. 15, for efforts supporting the command's worldwide mission.

NAVFAC Atlantic Commander, Rear Adm. Lou Cariello, announced Ericson as the 2016 NAVFAC Atlantic Engineer of the Year for significant personal achievements and contributions.

Ericson will now go on to compete for honors as the NAVFAC enterprise-wide Engineer of the Year.

Ericson is a senior leader in the command's Capital Improvements business line, working to advance the efforts of the engineering and design division's mechanical branch. He serves as a senior mechanical engineer and technical discipline leader, and is recognized as a subject matter expert in multiple mechanical and industrial systems.

Ericson's daily work includes offering consultation efforts, providing facilities designs and overseeing construction at Navy and Marine Corps facilities. According to Rex "Trip" Fitch, P.E. and LEED AP, NAVFAC Atlantic Engineering and Design Director, Ericson has a worldwide impact.

Fitch nominated Ericson for this honor based on superior work on engineering projects from Yorktown, Virginia to Whidbey Island, Washington.

Ericson leads efforts on Total Ownership Costs and energy policy and is a National Society of Professional Engineers accredited mechanical engineer. He uses integrated design techniques, affecting a culture of lower building costs across the entire NAVFAC enterprise.

Distinguishing himself from other engineers, Ericson has worked to provide educational opportunities for those within the enterprise. Since 2009 he has developed, presented and hosted annual mechanical engineering technical summits.

Ericson received his Masters of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Old Dominion University and earned a diploma from the U.S. Naval War College in strategic studies.

He is a member of several professional organizations to include the National Society of Professional Engineers and the Association of Energy Engineers. Civically active, he is a volunteer member of the NAVFAC Atlantic and Mid-Atlantic Contingency Response Team, deploying to hard-hit regions in the wake of Hurricane Georges in Puerto Rico and Hurricane Katrina in Mississippi.
