Puget Sound Navy Museum, Naval Undersea Museum and Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PSNS & IMF) hosted a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Fair at Naval Undersea Museum Keyport.

The STEM Fair is a monthly event, which invites students grades K-12, to learn about robotics, engineering, science and math.

"Not only is it important to study STEM concepts, but also to offer children the opportunity to build critical thinking skills," said Valerie Johnson, Naval Undersea Museum Keyport educator. "The STEM program allows children to work in teams, learn about science and engineering and really explore Navy based themes they won't receive in the classroom."

Volunteers range from parents of students at Mullenix Ridge Elementary to PSNS & IMF and Naval Undersea Museum Keyport.

"The STEM program has grown over the past year," said Stephen Mastel, PSNS & IMF worker and STEM coordinator. "The program has become a two day program that we present two times a month."

Students learn the basics of angles and calculations through building and launching hand-made rockets.

"This is our second year of five to become a full STEM school," said Jennifer MacDonald, teacher at Mullenix Ridge Elementary. "We chose to come to the Keyport Museum as a class field trip and to reach our goal as a STEM school."
