A Navy reservist and civil servant assigned to Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) Fleet Logistics Center (FLC) San Diego was selected as the NAVSUP Global Logistics Support Senior Sailor of the Year for the reserve component in a ceremony Nov. 19.

Logistics Specialist 1st Class (AW) Daniel Baldaramos, who also serves as a logistics management specialist and material manager in his civilian capacity at the same command, was awarded a Navy Commendation Medal for the achievement.

"It means a lot to me, because it's not just a meaningless title or something you just put up on your wall and forget about," said Baldaramos. "To me, it's recognition--for you and for your junior Sailors--for some of the hard work that has resulted in the success of your command. That's important."

As a civilian assigned to the NAVSUP FLC San Diego Southwest Regional Maintenance Center Waterfront Division, he spends his days expediting materials and repair parts for destroyers and littoral combat ships. One weekend a month and an additional two to three weeks out of the year, he oversees the entire NAVSUP FLC San Diego/Yokosuka reserve unit as leading petty officer, ensuring his unit delivers unparalleled logistics support to the warfighter.

"The prestigious Senior Sailor of the Year title is only given to a truly top-notch first class petty officer," said Master Chief Logistics Specialist (SW/AW) Francisco Diego, senior enlisted leader for NAVSUP FLC San Diego. "He embodies the model U.S. Navy Sailor, and his unwavering dedication and commitment to both his reserve unit and the command as a whole have positively impacted our mission. He exemplifies 'pride and professionalism.'"

Baldaramos joined the Navy in 1995 and spent a total of 11 years on active duty. In 2006, he decided to leave for the reserves to work on a bachelor's degree in business administration.

"I've seen a lot of people struggle with the military-to-civilian transition, but I never really had that issue," he said. "Ending up at this command for both my civilian and military assignments has really given me the best of both worlds. This command is my home, my family."

Four years later, after earning his degree and spending some time focusing on family, he was hired on as a civil servant. According to Baldaramos, he's hoping for a promotion to Chief Petty Officer before he retires from the reserves. He said he plans to aim higher in his capacity as a civilian between now and his civilian retirement, as well. In the meantime, he'll continue to serve the nation in both civilian and military capacities, and he's in it for the long haul.

"I'm going to continue to support the Navy in every way I can until they tell me to go home," he said. "It's what I love to do."
