Part of U.S. Navy Band Northeast's (NBNE) mission is to enhance public awareness of the Navy, educate Americans on the importance of Naval service, and inspire patriotism.

During its April 18-20 Pops Ensemble tour in Vermont, NBNE stayed in tune with this goal, performing three concerts in Stowe, Rutland and Randolph for a combined audience of more than 900 people.

At each performance, as the house lights dimmed, a triumphant melody resounded, setting the stage for the opening narration:

"America's Navy is a forward presence, ready and continuously on watch. More than 325,000 active duty Sailors and 107,000 reservists provide a full range of military operations to deter aggression, keep the sea-lanes open for trade and sustain America's sea power. In order to perform its mission, your Navy operates more than 270 ships and 3,700 aircraft. As I speak, Sailors are responding to worldwide challenges and emergencies, providing humanitarian aid, and preserving America's freedom...."

Following the monologue, the concerts formally began with "The Star Spangled Banner," continued through many musical styles, and concluded with "Armed Forces on Parade." During this final selection, current and former military personal, along with their families, were invited to stand and be recognized as their service song was played. After each concert, band personnel engaged with members of the audience.

Tuba player Christopher Roland recounts one such conversation.

"An audience member stated that she wasn't normally very patriotic; however, the concert made her feel a sense of pride and patriotism that she hadn't felt before," said Roland. "She was moved by the songs and was struck by the number of people who stood up during 'Armed Forces on Parade.' She realized that just about everyone has some connection to those who serve our country.

"The fact that she wasn't very patriotic and that our music brought out that emotion was significant. It reminded me of the impact we can have as musicians."

NBNE is one of 11 Navy bands worldwide with a responsibility to musically support 11 Northeastern states.

"The driving force for this tour was Navy outreach; to reach areas we have not been to in the past," said Lt. Gregory Fritz, director of NBNE. "As far as our current records show, we have never been to this area of Vermont."

NBNE will be continuing its mission with more concerts and tours this summer.

Upcoming events include participation at Fleet Week New York, performances during Rhode Island Navy Week, concerts in Maine, and two rock band tours to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Niagara Falls, New York. Also their annual Salute to Summer Concert and Fireworks at Naval Station Newport, will be held at the end of August.
