Sailors and civilians assigned to Commander Fleet Activities Chinhae (CFAC) participated in an integrated training team exercise June 30.

The exercise, a simulated a diesel spill, featured CFAC safety and environmental personnel working together to contain, secure and clean the affected area.

Along with securing the affected area, regional firefighters, security, medical, Seabees, and civilian staff members also simulated decontaminating personnel exposed to hazardous materials.

"This training provides an opportunity to have a ready resource available at CFAC to handle land-based spills," said John Messier, CFAC environmental director.

Training consisted of three days of classroom instruction with personnel from the Navy Safety Center as well as a walk-through for specific training groups.

The drill allowed CFAC personnel to train, practice and execute the capabilities for responding to hazmat spill drills, said Messier. He added that he believes practicing will make it easier to act in a real emergency.

The drill is expected to occur again in 2016. For more information on Commander, Fleet Activities Chinhae please visit http://www.cnic.navy.mil/regions/cnfk/installations/cfa_chinhae.html .
