Sailors and Marines aboard the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2) celebrated Independence Day with a steel beach picnic.

The event, which focused on promoting and defending freedom and democracy around the world, paid tribute to those who came before us and those who serve now.

"There are some beliefs defined in the U.S. Constitution embodying a group of ideals that we raised our right hands and swear to protect, even at the cost of our own lives. The belief that we are all created equal and endowed with unalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness," said Capt. Pete Mantz, Essex's commanding officer. "While many folks are back home planning events with the family, we stand the watch and we make great sacrifices and we take great risk to ensure these ideals endure for all of us."

The celebration, which was hosted by the Morale, Welfare and Recreation committee (MWR) and the First Class Petty Officers Association (FCPOA), required participation from Sailors and Marines in multiple departments and organizations.

"For the Independence Day steel beach picnic we wanted to make sure we involved every group and department with organizing the event," said Fun Boss Lt. j.g. Madison Jones. "We have the FCPOA grilling and serving, and we have a lot of Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions (CSADD) and MWR helping with all of the games setup. We tried to get everyone up here to celebrate the holiday together."

Attendees enjoyed cookout style food, music and games on the flight deck of Essex.

"I enjoyed the activities and games during the 4th of July celebration because it's good to have a joyful day to reflect on our nations past and to get a day off from work," said Aviation Structural Mechanic 3rd Class Kenneth Meeks. "This reminds me of barbecues and family reunions back home with how we gather together and participate in this holiday like a family."

The celebration concluded with a fireworks show put on by the weapons department using tracer rounds, flares, and the saluting battery.

"The fireworks show was awesome," said Lance Cpl. Domonique Wade. "All of those colorful rounds and laser lights made me feel like I was at home watching a fireworks show."

Mantz closed out the day's events by thanking the Sailors and Marines for their service and sacrifice.

"As we celebrate Independence Day I want to thank each of those who serve our nation for all that you do to keep America safe. God bless you and the great nation we defend; Happy Independence Day," said Mantz.

The Essex Amphibious Ready Group, with the embarked 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (15th MEU), is deployed in support of maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations.
