Sailors assigned to Naval Air Facility Misawa and members of the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) competed in a tug-of-war tournament at Misawa Air Base, July 11.

Sixteen JSDF and five U.S. Navy teams participated in the event.

The teams used in-sync movements and uniform rhythm while tugging the line to give them the best chance at victory, while the tournament's setting promoted enthusiastic cheering like any typical sporting event atmosphere.

After a long physical afternoon that included more than 40 tug-of-war matches, a JSDF team emerged victorious once again.

"These events enhance our relationship and give us a better way to meet people out of uniform while not in a serious situation so you can let your hair down," said Master Chief Electronics Technician Keith Weathers, from Pensacola, Florida. "The competitive spirit comes out and really shows how people take pride in what they do on and off duty."

The five U.S. Misawa-based teams were: Chief Petty Officer's Association (CPOA) "Old Goats", Naval Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department, 35th Fighter Wing's Medical, Naval Air Facility, and Misawa Crossfit.

The CPOA placed fourth in the tournament, the highest of all U.S. teams.

The tournament is held annually and has never been won by a U.S. team.

Numerous social and sporting events are held annually between JSDF and U.S. forces at Misawa Air Base to reinforce the relationship with the U.S. Navy and the Japanese people.
