Training evolves. Training that won wars generations ago is not the same as today. At Training Support Center (TSC) Great Lakes that evolution is taking place with fitness regimens as well. Sailors learned the role nutrition plays in their fitness during a briefing July 15.

"It's a two-fold thing, you have to eat (well) and you have to work out. You can't just work out; you can't just eat (well.) You have to do both," said Jacqueline Jackson, a fitness specialist with TSC.

During the briefing, Jackson instructed the Sailors about the different food groups and the role they play in fueling a workout. Additionally, she talked about foods that help weight loss and which foods to avoid.

"Without the knowledge behind it, you're just working out," said Fire Controlman Seaman Broderick Laws, a student assistant who was attending the briefing. "You don't really know what you're doing without the knowledge behind it."

In addition to the briefing, Jackson also set up individual meetings with each Sailor in order to address more specific fitness goals and how they can achieve them.

"This is just the basic stuff that still works," she said. "A lot of people are moving away from the conventional stuff and it can be more hurtful than helpful. The basic stuff works just as good if you stick to it."
