Navy Region Southeast hosted a four-day director’s meeting 25-28 February at the Region command headquarters in Jacksonville to provide leadership tools to prepare them for future challenges.

The event brought Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC) directors from the 15 Southeast Navy installations together for leadership and management training, networking, and opportunities for growth.

“The biggest takeaway was the important role that the Directors play in not only providing leadership to the Fleet and Family Support Centers, but also in retaining our talented work force, which is especially vital now with the competition for skilled employees at an all-time high,” Navy Region Southeast Family Readiness Program Director Matt Straughan said.

The training covered nearly 20 topics, with a heavy emphasis in management and human resource skills to help ensure the directors have the necessary tools for success. Some of the topics included: Rewards and Recognition, The 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace, Hallmarks of Supervisory Success, Creating Your Strategic Plan, Non-Appropriated Fund Personnel Policies and Procedures, and more.

The Navy Region Southeast Family Readiness team had been planning the event since April 2019. A combination of region and installation employees and contract personnel taught the classes.

The training provided an opportunity to share best practices, according to Straughan, but much of the benefit was the interaction between the directors and region staff.

“With several new directors in attendance, it was an opportunity for them to meet the rest of directors and the headquarters staff. Putting a face to a name always leads to better communications and also provides veteran directors an opportunity to mentor new directors,” he added. “The meeting was a tremendous opportunity to discuss the best way ahead with new challenges that Family Readiness is facing.”
