Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Mid-Atlantic Supervisor Timothy John, a 45-year government service career employee at Public Works Department (PWD) Great Lakes, has been named recipient of the 2020 Peggy B. Craig Lifetime Service Award.

The prestigious award, given each year, was established in 2012 and named in honor of a longtime NAVFAC headquarters employee to recognize civil servants who best personify a career of service, selflessness, and dedication with 20 or more years of service to NAVFAC, the 1st Naval Construction Division, the Center for Seabees and Facilities Engineering, or any subordinate unit.

“Congratulations on your selection as a 2020 NAVFAC Peggy Craig Lifetime Service Award recipient,” said NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic Commanding Officer Capt. Rich Hayes. “Your record of professional excellence, leadership, and commitment to the development and mentorship of your personnel epitomizes the spirit of Peggy Craig and reflects positively on NAVFAC and the entire Navy and Marine Corps team.”

John’s record of professional excellence has been well documented through numerous large and small awards throughout his nearly half-century government service career – all while working for NAVFAC. In 2005, John received the Meritorious Civil Service Award for his efforts during the renovation of the base fitness facility that directly supports Sailors at Naval Station Great Lakes, and for his work during renovations of living quarters on the installation. In 2006, he was selected as the Federal Employee of the Year for the Chicago area for his dedication to the installation. John expressed his thanks to the command and credits his success to family.

“I am grateful NAVFAC would consider me for this award,” John, a Twin Lakes, Wisconsin, native said. I thank command leaders, past and present, and all the tradesmen who have supported me over the years. My success is due to my parents who instilled a strong work ethic in me, and to my wife who has been by my side for the past 38 years, supporting me and my career.”

John started his NAVFAC career in 1975 as a mason apprentice, three weeks after graduating from Wilmot High School in Kenosha County, Wisconsin. He also holds an associate’s degree for Apprenticeship Programs from Lake County College of Illinois. For the past 25 years he has led a group of 13 to 15 tradesmen in the Structural and Finishing Shop, executing projects for the Navy at PWD Great Lakes.

“The favorite part of my job is receiving a new project or challenge to complete, and creating a plan to accomplish it,” he said. “Almost all of our projects have multiple trades involved, so it is rewarding to see a group come together to execute.”

Since 2012, John has been specifically appointed as the project manager for any project with high mission impact and complexity. If a difficult project is on the horizon, the public works officer hand selects John to ensure success.

“My job has been very rewarding,” he said. “I’ve had many opportunities that have made my career fulfilling and I thank all of those who I have had the pleasure and privilege of working with over the years.”
