Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southwest awarded a $57.2 million construction contract, March 26, in San Diego for the renovation and addition to a hangar, and the new construction of an aircraft parking apron and parking facility at the Marine Corps Air Station in Yuma, Arizona.

Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southwest awarded a $57.2 million construction contract, March 26, for the renovation and addition to a hangar, and new construction of an aircraft parking apron and parking facility at the Marine Corps Air Station in Yuma, Arizona.

“This project will have an immediate and direct positive impact to Marine Corps Aviation Operations with the sustainable adaptive reuse of existing facilities, a lower footprint multi-story parking facilities and much needed additional aircraft parking apron,” said Edie Sinclair, NAVFAC Southwest project manager.

Harper Construction Co. Inc. of San Diego received the contract to provide for ground floor reconfiguration and a second-story addition to an existing hangar. Work on the hangar includes demolition, seismic structural upgrades, utility system modifications and upgrades, interior wall reconfiguration, security requirements, performance testing, and installation of new finishes and energy-efficient insulation upgrades. The contract includes the construction of an aircraft-parking apron on the north ramp and renovations to portions of the adjacent taxiways. Construction includes grading, compaction, airfield paving, grounding, tie-downs and airfield marking, signage and lighting to support the new apron. The contract also includes construction of a shared-use, multi-story parking facility.

“As a Hybrid Delivery method, this project provides an additional benefit to the larger Yuma, Arizona community by providing a multiplier effect to the local economy with the spending boost of a substantial and sustained construction population,” said Sinclair. “Contractors, sub-contractors, consultants and designers all will be mobilizing to Yuma to simultaneously support the design and construction efforts immediately following the economic downturn precipitated by the COVID19 pandemic.”

Fiscal year 2020 military construction Navy contract funds of $57.2 million are obligated to this award. NAVFAC Southwest is the contracting activity. Scheduled work will complete by summer 2023.
