Carrier Strike Group (CSG) THREE held a change of command ceremony at Naval Base Kitsap, April 30.
In a minimal ceremony conducted via teleconference, CSG-3 bid farewell to Rear Adm. Fred Pyle and welcomed Rear Adm. Jim Aiken as the new commander. In response to travel restrictions due to COVID-19, friends, family, and subordinate commanders listened to the ceremony on a conference call while the few attending in person ensured strict adherence to social distancing in accordance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regulations.
Pyle was presented with the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding service as Commander, Carrier Strike Group THREE. Following the award presentation, Pyle and Aiken thanked their families and officially changed command by reading their orders.
Pyle assumed command of CSG-3 in June 2019 and assumes command of Naval Warfare Development Command in May 2020. His previous Flag assignment was Deputy Director of Plans, Policy and Strategy (J5/8) at the U.S. European Command.
During Pyle’s time in command, CSG-3 supported operations across all fleet areas including a NATO Flag Ship deployment, a surge Southeastern Pacific deployment, ballistic missile defense tasking, and counter-drug operations. Under his leadership, CSG-3 increased fleet lethality through the integration of the E-2D “Advanced Hawkeye” and prepared for the arrival of the F-35C. He implemented a visionary training plan in preparation for future operations during the transition of six units to the maintenance phase.
“It was truly an honor to serve as the commander of Carrier Strike Group 3,” Pyle said. “Seeing the motivation and determination of these Sailors inspired me every single day.”
Aiken is reporting from his position as Deputy Director of Resources and Acquisition for the Joint Staff. He previously served as commanding officer of USS Chung-Hoon (DDG 93) and Commodore of Destroyer Squadron 60/Task Force 65.
