Southwest Regional Maintenance Center (SWRMC) continues to support the Fleet during the coronavirus pandemic maintaining focus on the mission priority of on-time delivery and safety of personnel.

Southwest Regional Maintenance Center (SWRMC) continues to support the Fleet during the coronavirus pandemic maintaining focus on the mission priority of on-time delivery and safety of personnel.

“The hard work of our military, civilian and contractor team has been nothing short of outstanding and I am proud of how they have responded,” said Capt. David Hart, SWRMC’s commanding officer. “Despite the concerns and challenges this virus has presented, it has not shifted our focus from on-time delivery.”

During this pandemic, SWRMC maintenance teams have worked tirelessly with numerous ships on the waterfront in providing onboard support, training, and outfitting ships with major equipment. They have been critical in ensuring the overhaul, system repairs, maintenance, and testing are completed and ready for ships’ certifications.

Recent examples of this include work on USS Makin Island (LHD 8) that involved correction of an immediate issue with equipment requiring weight testing. The testing of this newly installed equipment was needed in order to complete a certification prior to the ship’s next underway. This was a short fused requirement. The total time from job brokered to completion was four days due to the remarkable teamwork across SWRMC making sure Makin Island was ready for sea.

The Gas Turbine and Controls Branch of SWRMC’s Engineering Department recently provided exceptional support to USS Sterett (DDG 104) ahead of their Full Power Run as well. The engine work, calibration, and additional training provided to the Sailors onboard Sterett ensured the ship was ready to meet mission. SWRMC was also able to complete repairs to five safety stations onboard and installed 11 commercial off-the-shelf radar equipment including the installation and testing of 15 cables and 20 connectors, which is critical for the safe navigation of the ship.

SWRMC’s Production Shops are rising to the challenge. The Engine Shop was provided an early maintenance opportunity with work on USS Harpers Ferry (LSD 49) including the complete removal and replacement of 16 cylinder heads. They also completed main propulsion diesel engine work on fuel injection pumps and cylinder heads onboard six other ships for the Pacific Fleet. The Rig Teams, Dive Teams, Combat Systems Shop, and Valve Shop accomplished numerous work orders onboard USS Pearl Harbor (LSD 52), USS Shoup (DDG 86), USS Harpers Ferry (LSD 49), USS Lake Champlain (CG 57), USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000), USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), and USS Stethem (DDG 63) as well. This work was coordinated by on-site assistance from the Production Control Branch. The Department’s efforts showed their ability to flex and support fleet requirements for on-time operations.

“Without the whole SWRMC team’s dedication to the mission and the Fleet, these wins and continued support of on-time delivery would not have been possible,” added Hart. “SWRMC has risen to the occasion and answered the warfighters’ call.”

SWRMC is meeting its mission to provide superior ship maintenance, modernization, technical support, and training for the Pacific Fleet.
