The Naval Submarine Support Center (NSSC) held a change of command aboard Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Georgia, July 17.

Cmdr. Jeff Nesheim was relieved by Cmdr. Ron Allen as commanding officer of NSSC during a ceremony on base.

Nesheim, from Viborg, South Dakota, graduated from South Dakota State University with a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering, and received a master’s in engineer management from Old Dominion University. He joined the Navy through the Nuclear Prospective Officer Candidate Program.

“It has been an honor to serve as the commanding officer of Naval Submarine Support Center,” said Nesheim. “NSSC is made up of professionals whose sole purpose is to ensure the mission success of the assigned SSBNs (Ohio-class ballistic-missile submarines) and SSGNs (Ohio-class guided-missile submarines).  They are truly dedicated members of Team Kings Bay.”

At sea, Nesheim served aboard the Ohio-class ballistic-missile submarines USS West Virginia (SSBN 736), and served as the executive officer aboard the Los Angeles-class attack submarine USS Pasadena (SSN 752) in Pearl Harbor.

“You saw evacuations for three hurricanes and conducted sortie and recovery for all of them - not to mention, a tornado,” said Rear Adm. John Spencer, Commander, Submarine Group Ten. “Your team was an integral part in processing all the travel vouchers for those hurricanes to support our Sailors and their families.  Thank you for the work you’ve accomplished in the last eight years here at Team Kings Bay. Your exceptional leadership is visible in the high state of morale in the staff.”

The incoming commanding officer, Allen, previously served as Commander, Submarine Squadron 16, Deputy for Readiness. Allen is from St. Louis, Missouri, and was commissioned through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps at Virginia Military Institute.

“I am honored to be joining the NSSC Kings Bay team, an organization that is so crucial to the efficient functioning of our ballistic-missile and guided-missile submarine forces,” said Allen.

He contributes his success to his wife, Meghann and children Adrian and Ronnie.

“Ron, you are entering a new phase of leadership and responsibility,” said Vice Adm. Daryl Caudle, Commander, Submarine Force Atlantic in a message to the commandanders. “Your visionary leadership and commitment to excellence will be vital to the submarine force. You have been well prepared and no doubt will embrace this assignment with passion and confidence.”

NSSC provides centralized administrative and support services to the submarines and staffs of Submarine Squadron 16, Submarine Squadron 20 and all visiting and other assigned units.  It also assists with material, management, personnel, and waterfront operations for the Kings Bay area.

Nesheim will now serve as the Planning Integration Branch Chief in the Capability and Resource Integration Division, U.S. Strategic Command.

Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay is homeport to all East Coast Ohio-class submarines.
