Naval Support Activity Washington (NSAW) is preparing to participate in exercise Citadel Shield-Solid Curtain 2019 (CS/SC 19), which is scheduled to take place Feb. 4-15.
CS/SC is an annual two-week anti-terrorism and force protection (ATFP) exercise conducted by Commander, Navy Installations Command and Commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command on all Navy installations in the continental United States.
“I’ve participated in these exercises since 2009,” said Justin Petrick, NSAW Emergency Manager. “After the Navy Yard shooting, there was a priority placed on anti-terrorism type exercises which we conduct annually.”
“The big takeaway from the Navy Yard shooting is people need to be prepared at their offices. While the installation takes care of the incident, people have to be able to take care of themselves. Hopefully as we go through this and we have some sort of lockdown, it’ll give our tenants and their employees time to conduct their own internal training at the same time.”
NSAW’s installation security officer Lt. Cmdr. Daniel Topper will help plan and develop drills to asses preplanned responses and antiterrorism plan. He’ll review tactics, techniques and procedure of Navy security forces during the exercise. He says personnel involved in CS/SC should appreciate the learning opportunity available to them.
“It’s ok to make mistakes, especially in a training environment. Learn from those mistakes, have thick skin during assessor feedback, make adjustments and course correct. Exercises such as Citadel Shield-Solid Curtain are very important to mission readiness. They allow us to identify areas of improvement and areas we want to sustain as an entire team, not just at the installation level,” said Topper.
For real-time updates on force protection conditions and other emergency, environmental, or exercise related impacts on the area, personnel should register for the AtHoc wide-area alert network. Personnel should also familiarize themselves with their command or tenant command anti-terrorism plan to find out what to expect during the exercise.
