Runners from across all 16 Commander, Navy Region Southeast installations will have a chance to compete with each other and win some great prizes during the first-ever regional Navy Birthday Run, presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield.
Participants will compete locally, as well as on a regional level in a timed 5k run. Entrants will need to register for their installation event and race times will be used to determine the region-wide winners.
The concept was prompted by the successful 2018 Jacksonville tri-base area run. There hadn’t been a region-wide Morale Welfare and Recreation (MWR) event for a long time, and the region MWR marketing and fitness teams wanted to give it a try.
“We thought this would be a good event to build teamwork across the region while highlighting the Navy’s birthday,” Quality of Life Director Amy Cimino-Shockley said.
Registration opened for each event around Aug. 31, but the installations will determine exactly when and how to register. Runners should check with their local MWR for details.
The top three winners in the male and female categories will receive custom medals. Every participant will receive a commemorative T-shirt and be entered into a drawing at their installation for a $100 VISA gift card, sponsored by GEICO Military. To win the drawing, runners must be present to win after completing the 5k.
The Southeast Region top three winners in the male and female category will receive custom plaques and cash prize of $200, $100 and $75 respectfully.
Installations are encouraged to highlight the Navy’s birthday during the competition and several are hosting cake cutting ceremonies, playing music before and after the event, or serving food for a party.
The event should be a great time to create some healthy competition between the installations,” Cimino-Shockley said, “as well as create some camaraderie among the Navy Region Southeast Sailors in celebration of the Navy’s Birthday.”
Naval Air Station Pensacola and Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base New Orleans will kick-off the event with their birthday runs Oct. 10. NAS Meridian and NAS Jacksonville will close the regional competition with their 5k races Oct. 19.
