WASHINGTON (NNS) -- On Oct. 8, Secretary of the Navy Richard V. Spencer named a future Littoral Combat Ship, USS Cleveland.

The future USS Cleveland, will be named in honor of Cleveland, Ohio and the citizens of Cleveland for their service and longstanding support of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps team. This is the fourth ship to bear the name Cleveland.

“The city of Cleveland has been steadfast partner to the Navy and Marine Corps team and it is fitting to name a future Littoral Combat Ship after the city and citizens of Cleveland,” said Secretary of the Navy Richard V. Spencer. 

Littoral Combat Ships are named for regionally important U.S. cities and communities.

The Navy has accepted delivery of 16 LCSs. Including the recent contract modifications, a total of 32 LCSs have been procured, with 10 ships under construction (LCS 15, 17, 19-26).

LCS is a modular, reconfigurable ship, designed to meet validated fleet requirements for surface warfare (SUW), anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and mine countermeasures (MCM) missions in the littoral region. An interchangeable mission package is embarked on each LCS and provides the primary mission systems in one of these warfare areas.
