Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Far East completed a project to upgrade exterior lights with energy-saving light emitting diode (LED) lights on board Naval Air Facility (NAF) Atsugi, Japan Dec. 2.

"These LED lights are already displaying their advantages over the older High Intensity Discharge (HID) and High-Pressure Sodium (HPS) lights," said Chief Petty Officer Ferdinand Diwa, NAF Atsugi installation energy manager. "Their superior illumination for residents, pedestrian pathways, parking and street areas ensures security and enhances safety."

The project replaced 605 HID, HPS and fluorescent lights throughout the installation, including along the flight line. The new lights are expected to decrease the installation's electricity bill by approximately $50,000 each year.

"The payback for this exterior lighting upgrade will significantly lower NAF Atsugi's energy costs and is a big step toward meeting the President's and Secretary of the Navy's energy conservation goals," said Diwa.

The project was funded by Commander, Navy Installation Command's Restoration and Modernization - Energy (RMe) program. The RMe program allows installations to replace old facility equipment with energy-efficient equipment, ultimately improving facilities and utility systems and saving energy in the process.
