The Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED) Fleet Support and Logistics, recently recognized Naval Health Clinic Cherry Point’s (NHCCP) Materiel Management (MATMAN) department as the top performer in Navy Medicine East for Fiscal Year 2019 in logistics metrics.

NHCCP’s MATMAN also received this recognition for FY 18.

NHCCP exceeded the Navy Medicine enterprise metrics median across all five metrics (master catalog synchronization rate, use of standard/preferred item, use of eCommerce, strategic sourcing effectiveness and use of government commercial purchase card) more than any other activity from their region during FY 19.

The Navy Medicine enterprise logistics metrics provide BUMED with data regarding materiel standardization, increased cost savings and savings potential across the enterprise.

According to Laurie Varner, MATMAN assistant department head, “Our Defense Medical Logistics Standard (DMLSS) team consisting of Diane Boulanger, John Pick, Eddie Martinez, Mark Flores, and Hospital Corpsman Kaitlyn Timby, provide strict catalog management and screen every purchase to ensure we are utilizing mandatory sources. In addition, they are always reaching out to department supply representatives directly to ensure that necessary there are no delays in patient care.”

Commander Eddie Brinston, Director for Administration, Naval Health Clinic and Platform Support Director, Naval Medical Readiness Training Command (NMRTC) stated, “Ms. Varner and her team have done an impeccable job for the clinic and the command. The Materiel Management Department is the engine for our organization. We are fortunate our personnel’s productivity is the logistical model for Navy Medicine. Given BUMED recognition is affirmation our staff go above and beyond our moto of ‘Keeping the Warfighter in the Fight’ to do what is essential in providing world class medical care and training.”

Varner said, “Being a small command provides us opportunities to communicate directly with department heads and supply representatives to provide education on NAVSUP guidelines, use of mandatory sources and using items standardized by Medical Materiel Enterprise Standardization Office Program.

“Our staff is also resilient,” Varner added. “During the past year there has been vacant positions and manning shortfalls, but like any successful team, we were able to pull together and ensure we were communicating through every step in the purchasing process.”
