The dock landing ship USS Whidbey Island (LSD 41) departed Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek Feb. 18, 2020 to execute Mariner Skills Week.
The focus of Mariner Skills Week is to train and demonstrate numerous at-sea events testing the crew’s navigation, ship handling and seamanship abilities.
“During Mariner Skills Week we continue to build team cohesion so we can safely and effectively execute basic seamanship evolutions. We continue to establish a foundation of ‘right’ early in the training cycle to ensure our Sailors are ready to build on the basics as evolutions and the mission becomes more complicated,” said Cmdr. Jean Marie Sullivan, commanding officer of the Whidbey Island. “Success is a full team effort in this week’s evolutions.”
Upon completion of Mariner Skills Week, Whidbey Island will continue to progress through its training cycle preparing the ship and crew for future maritime operations.
