Sailors assigned to Commander, Submarine Squadron Fifteen attended a career day at Inarajan Middle School to expose children to the career fields offered in the Navy and submarine force, Feb. 21.

The Sailors taught over 100 students firefighting techniques, aspects of submarine life, first aid, and various career fields throughout the Navy to motivate students on their career path and foster the importance of education and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) related career fields.

“Career days like this are here to help motivate students to stay in school and spark creativity to imagine what they could do for a career in the future,” said Joey Paulino, a teacher at Inarajan Middle School. “I feel very fortunate that we were able to have so many different career opportunities available to our students today.”

Five Sailors volunteered for the event and shared their Navy experience with the students.

“The Navy provides a vast amount of opportunities to succeed in multiple different career fields,” said Chief Yeoman Eddie Aviles, a native of East Los Angeles, California. “Showcasing some of those career fields to the students is a great opportunity for us as Sailors to highlight the submarine force and ensure our future readiness.”

Students had the opportunity to try on firefighting equipment which proved to be one of their favorite parts of the demonstration.

“Being able to teach the children the fundamentals of firefighting was a great moment,” said Aviles to the students. “Each of them jumped at the opportunity to wear the gear and learn about what it takes to save the submarine.”

Upon completion of the demonstrations, the students were able to ask the Sailors specific questions on their jobs or lives in the Navy.

CSS-15 is located at Polaris Point, Naval Base Guam in Piti, Guam, and consists of four Los Angeles-class fast attack submarines. The squadron staff is responsible for providing training, material and personnel readiness support to these commands. Also based out of Naval Base Guam are submarine tenders USS Frank Cable (AS 40) and USS Emory S. Land (AS 39). The submarines and tenders are maintained as part of the U.S. Navy's forward-deployed submarine force and are readily capable of meeting global operational requirements.
