Surface Warfare Officers School Unit (SWOSU) Great Lakes hosted Navy Personnel Command (NPC) Engineering Detailers who met with over 75 Sailors August 22-23.

The detailing team led by Master Chief Machinist’s Mate Donald Miller, PERS 402 branch leading chief petty officer and detailer for senior chief and master chief machinist’s mates at NPC, gave a brief and met individually with Sailors from SWOSU, Training Support Center (TSC) and Recruit Training Command (RTC).

“Our goal is to give an overview of the detailing process and career management so that our Sailors could make the proper decisions in life,” Miller said. “We also met one-on-one to answer questions that Sailors had about their careers and give them guidance on what is available and where and what they should do to request what they are asking for.”

On the second day of the visit the detailers toured five SWOSU A Schools and Basic Engineering Common Core where students learn engineering principals and theory to showcase staff responsibilities and new curriculum at SWOSU.

“The tour of SWOSU schools was very informative,” Miller said. “It was great seeing the technology used in the classrooms and labs and most importantly the professionalism and pride of the instructors. My goal with the tour, as detailer, was to get a better idea on manning to see if there was anything we and NPC can do better serve the command.”

The detailing team also toured RTC’s USS Trayer (BST-21) where recruits complete their final test before graduation and TSC’s Boorda Hall barracks.

“This was an outstanding opportunity to hear about career management and detailing straight from NPC PERS-402 Enlisted Engineering Detailing Team,” said SWOSU Great Lakes Commanding Officer Cmdr. Terrance Patterson. “SWOSU sponsored tours of RTC trainers, SWOSU’s new curriculum and schoolhouses and TSC barracks along with detailer to constituent, one on one interview time. In our fast-paced navy and electronic social media environment, it is very rare to be able to talk to your detailer face to face. As a leader, it was very important that we provide this for all Great Lakes area staff. At the end of the day, it’s all about educating our most valuable resource – Sailors.”
