Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southeast awarded a $10.4 million firm-fixed-price task order to The Korte Company of St. Louis, Missouri, Aug 30, for the renovation of hangar 1338, at Naval Station (NS) Mayport, Florida.

The design-build construction project will install two Navigation, Seamanship and Shiphandling Trainer (NSST) training modules, and related equipment.

“The NSST is a vital tool for training our sailors in simulated real-world situations they may encounter while underway,” said NS Mayport Executive Officer Cmdr. Patricia Tyler. “The simulators allow bridge teams to effectively train in a safe and controlled environment, providing immediate feedback and lessons learned to our Warfighters.”

The NSST is a simulated ship’s bridge that allows bridge teams to conduct realistic navigation and ship handling training in a virtual environment. It includes two full-mission bridge simulators, designed to prepare sailors to operate as a team when deployed.

The simulators use the latest off-the-shelf technology to project realistic, computer generated video onto curved screens that allow trainees to practice a wide variety of maneuvers including mooring, anchoring, underway replenishment and more.

The existing building is a small hangar facility, approximately 14,000 square feet in size. The project will build out the required multi-level trainer spaces and will provide supports, power, and infrastructure for video projectors, video displays, four large curved screens, consoles, furniture, server rooms and two briefing rooms.

The renovation will also include a complete removal and replacement of all existing mechanical and electrical systems.

The work is expected to be completed by March 2021.
