The commanding officer of Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit (CNATTU) North Island announced during an Oct. 18 all-hands call that the command earned the 2019 Navy Community Service Program Project Good Neighbor Flagship Award in the Medium Shore Command category.

Cmdr. Mark Kennedy explained to his team that Commander, Navy Region Southwest recognized CNATTU North Island for its year-round volunteer-supported programs and projects that promoted outreach activities that established and restored hope to their local community.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the team at CNATTU North Island for being selected for the 2019 Good Neighbor award,” said Kennedy. “Their willingness to dedicate time to support the community, in addition to meeting our mission of providing the Fleet well-trained Sailors and Marines has impressed me from day one.”

In 2019, CNATTU North Island military, civilians and family members volunteered for 3,293 hours in support of 20 agencies and 135 events that served over 7,000 civilians. These community service activities enabled each volunteer to gain valuable insight through positive interactions with youth, disabled and elderly citizens.

CNATTU North Island delivered over 3,049 meals for “Meals on Wheels”, collected 648 pounds of trash for “I Love a Clean San Diego”, gathered 2,180 pounds of trash for “Adopt-A-Highway” and dedicated over 200 hours at Dr. Jack Kimbrough Elementary School.

“Community service is a long standing tradition here at CNATT North Island,” said Kennedy. “These projects not only help us develop a strong relationship with our local community, but they provide our personnel the opportunity to grow personally and professionally.”

The Project Good Neighbor award is separated into three categories – shore commands, sea commands and overseas commands. These areas are divided into three size categories that include small commands with 199 personnel or less, medium commands that range between 200 and 499 personnel and large commands with 500 plus personnel.

CNATTU North Island is a training unit of the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training (CNATT) located onboard Naval Air Station Pensacola. CNATT develops, delivers and supports aviation technical training at 28 sites located throughout the continental United States and Japan.

CNATT is a technical training agent for the Naval Aviation Enterprise – an organization designed to advance and sustain naval aviation war fighting capabilities at an affordable cost.
