Southwest Regional Maintenance Center (SWRMC) hosted a Multicultural Day Celebration complete with guest speakers, music, dance and more at Anchors Catering and Conference Center in San Diego, Oct. 22.
SWRMC Sailors, civilians and members of the San Diego community came together to embrace and celebrate the diversity of the command and community during the day-long celebration.
"This event is an opportunity for everyone to share in the differences that make us great,” said Master Chief Petty Officer Asa Worcester, SWRMC’s Command Master Chief. “It is our diversity that makes us a talented and empowered force working together to meet the mission and support the Fleet.”
Event highlights included speakers on behalf of black history, women’s equality, disability employment, veteran’s appreciation, Asian American-Pacific Islander heritage, Native American heritage, Hispanic heritage and LGBT history. Ms. Rose Schindler, Holocaust survivor, shared her moving testimony of survival as the Days of Remembrance guest speaker.
“When you look at the depth of what is going on here today, you have so much diversity and conversations about race, abilities and cultures. There is more to diversity than just color. You are doing more and I am happy to be part of it,” said Michael Brunker, Vice President for Mission Advancement. Brunker participated in the event as a guest speaker on behalf of Black History Month and addressed the contributions of Civil Rights leaders throughout history.
"We are fortunate to have this opportunity to embrace so many cultures and also to share our backgrounds and experiences,” said Silvia Mays, SWRMC Multicultural Committee Chair. “I am honored to have been part of this empowering celebration of cultures!”
SWRMC is meeting its mission to provide superior ship maintenance, modernization, technical support and training for the Pacific Fleet.
