Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southeast attended a tour with industry partners to showcase the command’s role in the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) platform, Oct. 29, onboard Naval Station (NS) Mayport.

Thirty-one industry partners attended the tour from construction, environmental and base operation service companies.

“The goal of this event was to foster engagement with industry partners regarding the LCS construction program and infrastructure readiness requirements that directly support the fleet,” said Assistant Deputy Director for Small Business Cory Iselin. “We want to maintain a competitive landscape by increasing interest from industry in the LCS program.”

Guests were placed into two separate groups, in order to provide a more personal experience. The groups rotated between presentations by subject matter experts about the LCS mission, the facilities supporting it and a guided tour of the USS Little Rock.

While onboard the USS Little Rock (LCS-9), guests were able to tour the spaces and learn about the versatile “plug and play” mission packages that are interchangeable depending on the mission. Guests were also able to learn about LCS operations and the training pipeline directly from Sailors assigned to the ship.

NS Mayport is expected to serve as a homeport for a total of 14 LCS by 2024. NAVFAC Southeast supports this effort through the design and construction of training and simulation, administration and maintenance facilities for the entire LCS platform assigned to NS Mayport.

“PWD Mayport provides support to all facets of facilities management,” said NS Mayport Public Works Officer Cmdr. Juliana Strieter. “We provide contract administration for several military construction projects that will build additional facilities to support administration, training and parking for LCS Sailors.”

Initiated in 2002, the LCS was designed to be capable of changing its primary mission whether operating near the shore or in the open ocean. It’s missions can vary from anti-submarine warfare, mine countermeasures, surface warfare, counter-drug operations and humanitarian relief efforts.
