Capt. Khary W. Hembree-Bey, commanding officer of Naval Surface Warfare Center, Corona Division, stressed the urgency of attacking the Navy’s issues – including the threat of adversaries – at his monthly town hall meeting with employees Nov. 20.

“What is the great power competition? It’s analogous to the Cold War,” said Hembree-Bey. “We’re not going to be able to outgun or outman the competitor and we can’t rely on our industrial might to build more trucks and machines, because the stuff we put on the battlefield is not going to win the next war. It’s going to be our ingenuity – how we stay ahead of our near-peer competitors and keep the adversary at bay. So, we need to maintain that sense of urgency.”

NSWC Corona fosters that ingenuity through its research, development and application of data analytics and other technologies that help the U.S. Navy stay ahead of its competitors. The Universal Hub for Big Data, a mega project to catalog, combine and share Navy test and evaluation data across the warfare center enterprise, is one project that originated at NSWC Corona. Other projects that support the Navy readiness efforts include laser-based biosensors for biohazard detection and a proprietary software application for tracking all ammunition used by the Marine Corps.

Readiness applies not only to the present but to the command’s role in the future.

“What are the command’s best examples for today?” said Hembree-Bey. “How are we competing against our near-peer competitors? What are we doing to increase our readiness of the force? I want to look at 2030 and beyond.”

Hembree-Bey also spoke of the inspiration gained from the Command Leadership Forum, a semi-annual event where NAVSEA warfare center leaders come together to discuss best practices. NSWC Corona was one of three presenters, providing examples of NSWC Corona accomplishments that impact readiness.

“Everybody wants to do data analytics, and everybody’s doing it in their own stovepipe version,” said Hembree-Bey. “And they want more of it. So it’s incumbent upon us to determine the vision.”
