CNO Gilday and Congressman Joe Courtney, Chairman of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Seapower and Projection Forces, visited General Dynamics Electric Boat together in Quonset Point, R.I., Dec. 10.
Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Mike Gilday and Congressman Joe Courtney, Chairman of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Seapower and Projection Forces, visited General Dynamics Electric Boat together in Quonset Point, R.I., Dec. 10. The visit follows the recent Block V Virginia-Class Submarine contract announcement last week, which is the largest Navy shipbuilding contract in history. “The Navy’s first acquisition priority is recapitalizing our Strategic Nuclear Deterrent -- Electric Boat is helping us do just that,” said Gilday. “Together, we will continue to drive affordability, technology development, and integration efforts to support Columbia’s fleet introduction on time or earlier.” During their visit, Gilday and Chairman Courtney saw manufacturing, modular construction, and outfitting of future Virginia and Columbia class submarines at the General Dynamics Electric Boat facility. “On the heels of having the largest-ever shipbuilding contract just recently awarded to General Dynamics Electric Boat in Groton, and as our manufacturing sector continues to ramp up in preparation for the construction of Columbia-class submarines, it’s an exciting time for eastern Connecticut and for our entire region,” said Chairman Courtney. “I know that our hard-working shipbuilders, our partners working to prepare the workforce, and the experts at EB are up to the task, and it was great to have a chance to help showcase EB’s operations in Rhode Island today to Admiral Gilday.” Get more information about the Navy from US Navy facebook or twitter.
