A U.S. Naval Hospital Guantanamo Bay (USNH GB) officer has been elected to the Council of Regents. Lt. Cdr. Eugene Smith, Jr., director for administration, USNH GB is slated to take office at the Council of Regents meeting March 21, 2020, during American College Healthcare Executives (ACHE) 63rd Congress on Healthcare Leadership at the Hyatt Regency Chicago. As a Regent, Smith will represent ACHE’s membership in U.S. Navy, District 6.

“My goal as a Regent is to promote Lifelong Learning by working with Navy Medicine’s executive leadership to create a culture where educational growth is supported and promoted,” Smith said. “For me, Lifelong Learning goes well beyond obtaining college degrees, but is an ongoing, voluntary, and self-motivated pursuit of continuous learning.”

Smith explained he grew up in a household where the highest level of education for his father and mother were second and fifth grades, respectively. He advised this played a role in him learning at an early age the importance of continuously developing educational pursuits.  

Capt. Ann Case, Executive Officer, USNH GB touted his knowledge as a Navy Medicine Healthcare Administrator and admitted to not being surprised Smith was selected as a Regent.

“He is an extremely well-versed Navy Medicine Healthcare Administrator,” she said. Case revealed she believes Smith’s previous duty stations and time working at the Bureau of Medicine solidified the decision for him to become Navy Medicine’s Regent for ACHE.

Prior to his election, Smith received the ACHE Regent’s Junior Healthcare Executive of the Year award. He is also certified Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives as well as a Board Certified Lean Six Sigma Green Belt.
