Naval Station Everett held a Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) Volunteer Appreciation Ceremony to recognize SAPR Victim Advocates (VA) assigned to support 30 commands across 11 states in Navy Region Northwest, April 24. 

The event was held in conjunction with April being Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month and this year’s theme, “Protecting Our People Protects Our Mission.”

Cryptologic Technician (Collection) 1st Class Eureka S. Johnson, attached to Information Warfare Training Site (IWTS) Pacific Northwest was awarded a flag letter of commendation in recognition as the 2019 Regional Outstanding Uniformed VA by Rear Adm. Christopher S. Gray, commander, Navy Region Northwest. 

Johnson dedicated 1,704 hours of SAPR unit VA duty for Sailors and family members of Naval Station Everett, 14 tenant commands, six Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps units and 14 navy operational support centers. She also trained 14 prospective unit VAs from nine commands across Navy Region Northwest that resulted in 24/7 response capability and the promotion of sexual assault awareness and prevention. Johnson is a trained VA that dedicates her off-duty time to the regional SAPR DoD Safe Helpline and volunteers to help sexual assault victims through the entire process of dealing with traumatic events.

“CTR1 Johnson went above and beyond the duties of a unit VA to ensure that the personnel standing watch were trained and the Sailors, Marines and their families from the Pacific Northwest Region received the help needed,” commented Catherine Hix, the sexual assault response coordinator for Naval Station Everett. “CTR1 Johnson sets the standard for what a uniformed VA is and deserves to be the 2019 Uniformed Victim Advocate of the Year.”

Johnson is a native of Long Beach, California, and is studying towards a degree in psychology. Her interest in social behavior and cognitive processes directly contributes to her compassion to help those who are victims of abuse, violence, or assault.

IWTS Pacific Northwest is a learning site under the Information Warfare Training Command (IWTC), San Diego. IWTC San Diego, as part of the Center for Information Warfare Training (CIWT), provides a continuum of training to Navy and joint service personnel that prepares them to conduct information warfare across the full spectrum of military operations. 

With four schoolhouse commands, two detachments, and training sites throughout the United States and Japan, CIWT is recognized as Naval Education and Training Command’s top learning center for the past three years. Training over 21,000 students every year, CIWT delivers trained information warfare professionals to the Navy and joint services. CIWT also offers more than 200 courses for cryptologic technicians, intelligence specialists, information systems technicians, electronics technicians, and officers in the information warfare community.
