Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. John Richardson hosts Adm. Sir Philip Jones, First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff, United Kingdom Royal Navy.

Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. John Richardson hosted Adm. Sir Philip Jones, First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff, United Kingdom Royal Navy, April 30.

During a day of engagements that included discussions between senior leaders of the Royal Navy and U.S. Navy leadership, they signed a statement reaffirming their commitment to continued cooperation, with a focus on nuclear capability, carrier operations, force development and interoperability. They also agreed to further strengthen their collaboration in the North Atlantic and underwater battlespace.

“It is always such an honor and pleasure to meet with my friend and colleague Admiral Sir Philip Jones, as our two nations and navies share a very special relationship,” Richardson said. “The First Sea Lord is an exceptional leader and is instrumental in reinvigorating operational capabilities that enabled the United States Navy and the Royal Navy to sail together across the globe providing security that supports our two nations’ shared strategic interests.”

Richardson presented Jones with the Legion of Merit in recognition of his exceptional leadership during his tenure as the First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff. The citation highlighted the Royal Navy’s support of global operations that significantly impacted the European, Middle East, Indo-Pacific regions. 

Admiral Sir Philip Jones is scheduled to complete his tenure as First Sea Lord in June 2019 when he will be relieved by Adm. Tony Radakin.
